What I’ve been reading and watching, in my latest Substack.
… in my latest Substack.
This year I started a very irregular Substack and enjoyed a residency at the freshly-launched Hawthornden Brooklyn, where the picture below was taken. While it was another quiet year in terms of public work, I continued to develop projects in theatre, film, and TV.
For the next four weeks, I’m lucky to be part of a small group of writers in residence at Hawthornden Brooklyn, a very special space in Ditmas Park. I’m excited for the work that will unfold here.
For American Theatre, I spoke to Nick Westrate about his beautiful and unique production of A Streetcar Named Desire.
Dying City is currently running at Ball State University, in a production directed by Tristen Durham.

I was delighted to talk with the brilliant actor (and my good friend) Zach Booth on his queer sports podcast, Out of the Closet Sports. Listen on Apple Podcasts here and Spotify here.
Here’s my first post in what is likely to be a very, very infrequently updated Substack.
At the Vineyard Theatre’s 2024 gala honoring Jesse Tyler Ferguson, I reunited with three cast members of the 2004 production of Where Do We Live — Jesse, Emily Bergl, and Luke Macfarlane.

2023 was a year of writing: I worked on projects in film and TV and began writing a new play — the latter my focus at MacDowell this December. Also this year, I enjoyed conversations with East Forest, Raanan Hershberg, and Scare U on topics ranging from non-physicalist theories of consciousness to how the horror genre introduced me to dramatic storytelling. Now that we are past the long WGA strike, I look forward to the continued development of my projects in 2024, with the hope that at least one begins to come to fruition…

I’m thrilled to be a 2023 MacDowell Fellow. I’ll travel to Peterborough, New Hampshire for my residency this December.
For the fourth time, I talk with East Forest. We get into the mysteries of consciousness, my interest in Bernardo Kastrup and analytic idealism, parapsychology, psychedelics, some developments in my creative process, and his new album. Our chat is available on Apple, Spotify, and elsewhere.
Now or Later plays as a part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival this month.
